Start planning a move to Cyprus at least six months out, and start the pet paperwork first because it has the longest lead time. The critical path runs: pets and vaccinations at six months, residency research and property arrangements at four to five months, removals survey and booking at two to three months, packing and shipping at one month, and utilities, banking and registration in the first fortnight after arrival. Everything else can flex around that spine.
Six months out — the long-lead items
Two things have deadlines that cannot be compressed, so deal with them first. If pets are coming, book the vet now: the microchip must precede the rabies vaccination, which must precede a waiting period, which must precede the health certificate. Second, if a vehicle is coming, establish your likely import position before you assume it is worth shipping. Everything else at this stage is research — where on the island, whether to rent first, and what your residency route looks like.
Four to five months out — decisions that cost money
This is when the plan becomes concrete. Decide whether to buy immediately or rent for six months, which a surprising number of successful movers do because it lets you choose a village having actually lived nearby. Open a Cypriot bank account if you can, begin the residency application process, and if children are moving, contact schools now because the good ones fill up. Get a removals survey booked so you have a real figure rather than a guess.
Two to three months out — book the move
Confirm your removals booking and sailing window. Decide what is genuinely coming: this is the moment to be ruthless, because shipping a wardrobe to a house with fitted wardrobes is money spent on nothing. Notify HMRC, your pension provider, your bank and any relevant authorities of your intended departure. Arrange travel insurance that covers the transition period, and start the process of cancelling or transferring UK utilities and subscriptions.
One month out — the practical grind
Complete the valued inventory for customs and insurance, which takes longer than anyone expects. Set aside the items you will need in the fortnight before the container arrives and arrange for them to travel by air or with you. Confirm the pet health certificate appointment falls inside its valid window. Redirect post, cancel direct debits, and tell your GP and dentist. Have the difficult conversations about what is being given away.
The final fortnight
Our crews pack and collect, the container is loaded at our warehouse, and you should be left with suitcases and paperwork. Keep passports, the pet documentation, the inventory, proof of residence and property documents with you rather than in the shipment — every one of them is needed before the container is released. Take final meter readings and photograph them.
The first fortnight in Cyprus
Register with the immigration authorities within the window your residency route requires, apply for a Cypriot tax number, register with the health system, connect electricity and water, and get a local mobile number. If you are driving a UK vehicle, begin the registration and inspection process promptly because there are time limits. Then, when the container arrives, be there for the delivery.
