The relief exists, but it is conditional
Cyprus allows people transferring their normal residence from the UK to bring household effects in free of duty and VAT. It is a genuine relief and it is worth a great deal of money on a full container. It is also conditional, and the conditions are checked.
The relief applies to used household goods that you have owned and used for at least six months before the move. It does not apply to goods bought new for the new house, and it does not apply to commercial quantities of anything.
What has to be in place before the container sails
The single most common cause of delay is paperwork prepared after departure rather than before it. Before your container leaves the UK you should have:
- A detailed inventory, valued, in English. Not "box of kitchen items" but a genuine list. Customs read these.
- Proof of the Cyprus address — a title deed, a rental agreement, or a utility bill in your name.
- Evidence you are transferring residence, not simply sending goods. A residency application, a Yellow Slip appointment, or an employment contract all serve.
- Passport copies for everyone named on the shipment.
The Yellow Slip and why timing matters
Non-EU nationals, which now includes British citizens, register residency through the Civil Registry and Migration Department. The resulting certificate is universally called the Yellow Slip. You do not need it in hand before the container sails, but you do need to be visibly in the process, and you will need it before the goods clear.
In practice this means starting the residency process before shipping, not after the container has arrived in Limassol and is accruing storage charges.
Where people come unstuck
Three things account for most problems we see:
- Vague inventories. A short list invites questions, and questions cost days.
- New goods mixed in with used. If you have bought furniture for the new house, declare it separately and expect to pay duty on it. Attempting to pass it off as used is a poor idea.
- Assuming the relief is automatic. It is applied for, not granted by default.
What we do about it
We prepare the inventory to export standard as we pack, in English, itemised and valued, because that document does more to smooth a customs clearance than anything else. Our Cyprus partner handles the import formalities and the delivery, and they tell us early if something in the paperwork will cause a problem — which is much cheaper than finding out at the port.
