Groupage takes longer because the container waits until it is full and is unpacked at the destination before delivery. Air freight is the fast option, typically arriving within days. The sea passage itself is the most predictable part of the process; the variability sits at either end.
Where the time actually goes
People assume the ship is the slow part. In practice the sea leg runs to a published schedule and rarely surprises anyone. The variability is in the pre-shipment stage, where your collection date, the warehouse loading slot and the next available sailing have to align, and in the destination stage, where port release, customs clearance and delivery scheduling each take their own time. This is why we quote a window rather than a date.
Sole-use container versus groupage
A container of your own sails on the first suitable vessel after loading and goes straight to your address after clearance. Groupage waits for enough Cyprus-bound volume to fill the container, then has to be unpacked at destination and each consignment delivered separately. The cost saving is real and so is the additional time, typically a matter of extra weeks rather than days.
What causes genuine delays
In order of frequency: incomplete or inaccurate documentation triggering a customs hold, the client not being available in Cyprus when the container is ready for delivery, quay congestion at peak periods, and a property not being ready to receive the delivery. Only the third of those is outside anyone's control, which is why we are insistent about documentation and delivery availability.
Planning around the gap
The sensible approach is to assume you will be living without your possessions for some weeks and plan for it: a small air consignment covering clothes, kitchen basics, work equipment and anything a child cannot do without, plus whatever travels in your suitcases. Clients who do this find the waiting period unremarkable; clients who ship everything and hope for the best find it long.
