Pyla is unusual: it sits within the UN buffer zone and is one of the few villages with both Greek and Turkish Cypriot populations, adjacent to the Dhekelia sovereign base area. That gives it a long British association and a character quite unlike anywhere else on the island. Newer development around the village has attracted expat residents alongside service families.
